Fernbank Museum Hosts Archaeology Day - May 21st!

Explore Life and Culture from the Past Through Hands-On Activities and Demonstrations

May 16, 2016
Unleash your inner archaeologist as you investigate science, culture and discoveries during Archaeology Day at Fernbank Museum of Natural History. On Saturday, May 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., visitors will discover the methods archaeologists use to understand cultures from the past. The event will give Museum guests the chance to explore artifacts in a variety of ways – from creating their own pinch pot to discovering relics unearthed during construction of Atlanta’s MARTA lines.

A range of activities hosted by partners that include Kennesaw State University, Georgia State University and the Society for Georgia Archaeology will offer visitors an in-depth look at how archaeologists use clues to interpret life from the past. Special hands-on activities will include metal detecting, analyzing artifacts, piecing together pottery and exploring ancient technology. The Society for Georgia Archaeology’s “Abby the ArchaeoBus,” the Mobile Archaeology Classroom, will add to the day’s activities and provide visitors with an exploration of Georgia’s past. An archaeology-themed scavenger hunt will also be available.

Fernbank Museum will host this archaeological event in celebration of Georgia Archaeology Awareness month. Georgia Archaeology Awareness Month is a state-wide initiative designed to promote public awareness, support learning and encourage preservation of Georgia’s archaeological resources. During the event, visitors can expand their exploration of archaeology with several of Fernbank’s permanent exhibits that feature original artifacts found right here in Georgia.

SPECIAL SCOUT DISCOUNT: Scouts who arrive in uniform will receive $6 off Museum admission on Archaeology Day (must mention Scout discount to receive.) The discount is valid only on May 21 and is not valid for IMAX® tickets. Scouts must be 18 or younger.

All Archaeology Day activities are included with Museum admission, which is $18 for adults, $17 for seniors, $16 for children ages 3-12 and free for children ages 2 and under and Museum members.
Fernbank Museum of Natural History is located at 767 Clifton Road NE in Atlanta. For visitor information and tickets, visit www.fernbankmuseum.org.
