Decatur Macaroni Kid was celebrating the 60th Birthday of I Can Read! with Birthday Bashes throughout the community. We had an awesome opportunity to celebrate I Can Read! with an I Can Read! sponsored party. Well, in true Kimberly-fashion I went all out and hosted three mini events throughout our area. We had a blast! School was ending, parents were busy and we wanted to reach as much of our community as we could.  The pictures are from two of the parties hosted. Each child received I Can Read! goodies just in time for summer reading and to add to their personal libraries.

I Can Read! turned 60-years-young this year.  I clearly remember reading the Berenstain Bears to my brother and then having him show me how well he could read those same books back to me as he got older. We LOVED the Berenstain Bears. In turn, I introduced my son and many children to the Berenstain Bears, Paddington and Amelia Bedelia from 1998 to 2004 as I taught each of them to read as an educator in Greensboro, NC. It is even probably safe to say I personally have every Berenstain Bear book from 1975 to 2004. Yes, I am dating my self; however, for I Can Read! I will gladly tell you I am well into my 40s. I cannot wait to update my collection with the 60th Anniversary Editions, as well.

As a parent and former educator I really appreciate how I Can Read! books are organized into color-coded levels. This makes the process of learning to read gentler on the child and more rewarding because it put an emphasis on moving to a new color. Here is what I mean:

Yellow - My First: SHARED READING:

The first step to helping children become great readers is by reading aloud to them. Basic language, word repetition, and whimsical illustrations are ideal for sharing with your emergent reader.

Blue - Level 1: BEGINNING READING:

For readers who are beginning to sound out words and sentences. Short sentences, familiar words, and simple concepts for children eager to read on their own.

Red - Level 2: READING WITH HELP:

For readers who are increasingly confident but still need some help.  Engaging stories, longer sentences, and language play for developing readers.

Green - Level 3: READING ALONE:

Fun subjects kids love to read on their own. Complex plots, challenging vocabulary, and high-interest topics for the independent reader.

Purple - Level 4: ADVANCED READING: For kids who are well on the road to becoming book lovers. Short paragraphs, chapters, and exciting themes provide the perfect bridge to changer books.

With over 400 books available for your child to choose from it is a very encouraging experience. The more popular characters featured in the series include classics such as Amelia Bedelia; Danny and the Dinosaur; Frog and Toad; and Little Bear. They, also have more contemporary characters, such as: Pete the Cat; Pinkalicious; Fancy Nancy; The Berenstain Bears; Little Critter; Superman; Batman; and many more. There is a complimentary e-book of 100 Tips for Beginning Reading which can be found here.

I love an appreciate the well-deserved awards I Can Read! Has earned throughout the decades such as the Newbery Honors, Caldecott Honors, Geisel Honor, New York Times Outstanding Children’s Books, Parenting Best Children’s Books, Parenting Reading Magic Awards, and several more.
