“Welcome Wednesdays” Toddler Program at Dekalb History Center

Welcomes a New Visitor to the DeKalb History Center

By Marrisa Howard of The Dekalb History Center August 30, 2017

On the second Wednesday of each month, we have an unusual sight at the Historic DeKalb Courthouse. Toddlers. For young children, a routine is such an important element in learning and development and that is why every class will have the same routine. Each class focuses on a specific theme which we explore using math, science, art, and literature.

June’s focus was “Colors”. We started off the class by introducing different colors and practiced our matching skills. Next, we did a science experiment by mixing colors. We saw what happens when we mix red-blue and yellow-red.  Another component of the class is our “museum activity” where we move around to explore our exhibits or building. For this particular class, we took a tour of the Mid-Century Ranch House: Hip and Historic exhibit, looking for colors. Using the exhibit we were able to spot a pink bathroom, blue glassware, and a green couch. After settling back down, we read a story and finished by working on an art project. The final part of the class is the most fun for children: our Discovery Stations. Children have a chance after the class is over to explore and play with things that reinforce the theme and skills learned. This is where we can play with shaving cream, blocks, or a ball toss.

Our mission with Welcome Wednesday is to foster play, learning, and discovery with toddlers and their companions and we hope you will join us.
