A study by the University of Tennessee at Knoxville found reading just 12 books during the summer or any other season was as effective as summer school.
How can we get our kids excited about reading?
One way is to let our kids choose their own content. A trip to a Little Free Library in Decatur or Avondale will give your child plenty of choices and get them excited about picking up a book.

- Carol Hutton of 1886 N Decatur Road Atlanta, GA carolhutton8@gmail.com
- I had been wanting to build a Little Free Library for my church. But first I had to find just the right door and build the library around it. I hit all the antique and second hand shops near my home, but found nothing that inspired me until one weekend I went to visit my cousins in Ohio and we took a trip to Waynesville, Ohio. I walked into the first shop and there was the door I had been searching for all these months. I paid $15 for it and took it back home to start the project.
- Jessica Jordan of 457 Bridlewood Circle, Decatur, GA
- Our library is in Decatur Heights along Bridlewood Drive, which was once part of a horse bridle path used by Agnes Scott College students. Today it is a neighborhood filled with families.
- Blair McGowan of 1304 Amanda Circle, Decatur, GA
- We were inspired to build our LFL by a friend and decided that while we were building one we might as well build three. We kept one, gave one to the friend that inspired us, and gave the other to a family member who had been wanting an LFL of her own. We personalized ours by adding a box for dog treats to give our canine neighbors something to be excited about, too.
- Minkow Library of 295 Christmas, Atlanta, GA
- Ridgecrest of 581 Ridgecrest Road NE, Atlanta, GA
- My college age children and I built this on their spring break. I was sooo happy to finally be a steward!
- The Corner Book Nook of 2254 Wineleas Road, Decatur, GA
- For the Love of Books of 224 Glendale Avenue, Decatur, GA
- Lovingly made by a family friend, this LFL is in honor of the local community food pantry. Books exchanged here will also be used to provide reading material to clients of the food pantry.
- Medlock Neighborhood Library of 904 Schoel Drive, Decatur, GA
