A proud North Fulton High School and Georgia State University graduate, Ellis has devoted over 30 years to teaching, inspiring students, and building a strong sense of community in and out of the classroom.
A Well-Deserved Honor
City Schools of Decatur recently named Ellis its 2025-2026 Teacher of the Year, recognizing her unwavering commitment to education. Upon receiving the honor, Ellis shared her gratitude, saying, “What a blessing it is to be named City of Decatur’s District Teacher of the Year for the 25-26 school year. My mom, siblings, and teachers taught me so much about hard work. I can truly say it all paid off.”
A Career Rooted in Dedication
Ellis, an Atlanta native, found inspiration in her own third-grade teacher, setting her on a path to educate and uplift others. Since 1995, she has shaped the lives of students in Clayton County and DeKalb County, before joining City Schools of Decatur in 2014. Seeking a more up close and personal, community-focused school environment, she embraced the opportunity to make a meaningful difference.
How Edwin Ellis Is More Than Just a Teacher
As a Gifted Specialist at FAVE (Fifth Avenue Upper Elementary), Ellis has taught for eleven years, bringing innovation and leadership to her role as She is the academic coordinator for the Scholars on the Avenue extended-day tutoring program and the founder of Falcon Friends, a mentorship initiative fostering positive connections between students and staff.
For Ellis, teaching isn’t just a job—it’s a lifelong calling. Living near the community she serves, she often crosses paths with former students and parents, reminding her of the profound impact of her work.
As Decatur’s 2026 Teacher of the Year, Ellis continues to inspire, educate, and create brighter futures—one student at a time.
